Les Pontin introduced our 39th President Mike Healy.

Mike welcomed all to his first official meeting as President.  He welcomed Kevin McCormack a visiting Rotarian from Napier NZ.

Will Waterford advised the club that he has become a grandfather for the first time. Baby Henry is well and healthy. His second daughter is also pregnant and his son is getting married on 2nd September.

Marilyn Harris spoke on behalf of Kevin Leadbetter (Community Service Director). He is looking for suggestions in the planning stage of this year, in particular in reference to donations, partnerships with other Rotary clubs and community groups.

The meeting then broke into Club Assembly mode.
There was wide ranging discussion starting with Fund Raising. A fund raising committee was suggested, although this has not worked well in the past. Fund raising should not be the sole responsibility of the Community Service Committee – it should be a shared role although the lines are very much blurred.

Community Service should be all about service to the community rather than fund raising. Their focus should be in having a greater impact on the community. It was suggested that there is money available in the community and the public sector, we only have to identify the sources and put a decent proposal forward. A comment was made that we “Build the Future with action and vision”.

Sergeant Les suggested:
  • A list of set up items be made.
  • The club cupboard needs cleaning out.
  • Sergeant on the night does not have to be a long process, short and sweet is good.
  • The role of the Fellowship Officer is very important in welcoming members and guests to the meeting.
  • It is important to greet and thank the guest speaker. This is the responsibility of the person inviting them to the meeting.
  • A list of the duties for the next week to be announced at the meeting (even though it is published in the bulletin).
Vocational Service – Barbara Bailey.
  • 11th August is a vocational visit to Ross’s hangar.
  • Wednesday 2nd November  is a visit to TAFE at Mooloolaba for a vocational Dinner.
  • Patrick King is having a relaunch of his IT business on the 7th September.
She also presented Ross Harrison with the Rotarian of the Month Award.

The BBQ at the Air Museum raised about $3000. Will Waterford has volunteered to co-ordinate this project for next year.

It will be the same format as last year. He is looking for raffle prizes. A $600 bottle of Penfolds Bin 389 signed by Craig Lowndes and Peter Brock will be auctioned. There will be 2 hole-in one prizes (on the 2nd and 9th holes). Value will be $13,000 each. Sponsors and raffle prizes are now being sought.
