GUEST SPEAKERS:
Greig Lee-Archer introduced 2 of our members Bron and Noel Bates who have recently returned from their 3 rd visit to the UMOJA Orphanage in Remote Kenya some 2 hrs drive from Mumbasa.
Noel started by describing the trip in effect being 34 hrs from Brisbane each way and their contact with the orphanage commenced through Rotary Club of Biloela (their former club). The journey started in 2016 to see it take in their first children in 2021. It is supported by RAWCS.
Separate accommodation wings for boys and girls with current intake of 17 children aged between 4 to14 years of age. Capacity of around 25 with concerns of what comes next for the children. Bron reported that one sponsor was considering bringing their child over to Australia to complete their education.
Prior to heading over this time Bron and Noel raised $8,500 from a charity luncheon/afternoon with blind auctions, quilt sales and raffles included. Bron stated that one individual gave a lump sum $1,000 in view of the fact that Rotary guarantees at least 95% of all funds reach the intended target group. Members may be interested in Googling what some of the other Major players guarantee.

Details of how some of the children ended up in the orphanage were tragically covered by the speakers, but the overriding message was the hope that the start offered to these children, would not only help them catch up with their peers, but see them into a future life that their peers could but dream of Thanks were given to Bron and Noel for their presentation and hard work to date. The planning for the 4 th trip is under way.
They also managed to catch up with an exchange student in Belgium on this trip who lived with them some 10+ years ago.
