Evelyn McCorkell
We toasted The Rotary Club of Derry/Londonderry, which is a local group of people actively working on worthwhile community projects. Meets every Monday (except Bank Holidays) at 1.00pm in Da Vinci’s Hotel, Culmore Road, Londonderry.  The club was chartered on 17 July 1922 as The Rotary Club of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, not to be confused with Londonderry, New Hampshire USA. After their centenary they officially renamed the club as The Rotary Club of Derry and Londonderry to reflect the current usage in their city. No website, just a Facebook page at present.   John, the current president, said - to be honest, the club is dwindling and ageing, having currently only 15 members compared to over 70 members at its peak.
Activities include Youth Leadership, Rotary Kids Out Day, Lend With Care, Generation Chef (a joint sponsorship competition with Rotary Clubs and Third Level Colleges to promote catering apprenticeships). The Centenary Project, jointly with two daughter clubs, leveraged a Rotary Foundation Grant to provide a water supply to 180 homes and a school in Amarauli village in Nepal.  In the past they hosted a lot of Rotary Foundation Scholars and Group Study Exchange teams to Brazil, Japan, NZ and several Australian Teams but this has disappeared since the Rotary Foundation changed the rules. John MacCrossan, the President, led a Group Study Exchange team to District D9800 in Victoria and also to Queensland back in 2004. They recently had our 20-year reunion.   And last Monday they raised a toast to our Club here in Caloundra!

Ross also added, we are applying for a district grant for shelves and flooring for the day care centre in Cauayan and have asked the Rotary Club of Cauayan to partner us in the next project at the Bussyan School.   Malou Deakin is currently in the Phillipines, endeavouring to renovate a child care centre and seeking a district grant for this purpose.
