Guest Speaker:
Libby Harrison, (Win Fowles’ daughter) spoke about her Add Lib company where actors roleplay scenarios to assist with training professionals such as medical doctors, military personnel, police etc in simulated situations. The actors are generally acting as patients.
Add Lib is Affiliated with Griffith Uni. Lucy, Libby’s daughter, (who spoke at our club meeting) was also involved in acting when she was a 7 year old
Old saying:
Tell me and I forget
Teach me and I may remember
Involve me and I learn
To create better doctors and support their medical training
Libby has been working with Griffith Uni for 11 years – surveys of actors suggest they stay involved not for the pay but because of the warm fuzzy feeling they get being involved – the ‘kick’ they got out of the job was the best value in the job.
Eg how to break bad news to a patient
Specialty – sex health/body areas include respiratory and gastro
Patients are pretend
Why do they use actors? – role play – not popular with students/students too familiar with each other/too much medical jargon used – but actor will ask questions as don’t understand jargon
Role play with peers – doesn’t work as they are too familiar with each other
Realism v educationalism
Training:
- Body language extension
- Improvisation in simulation
- Heightened emotional status
- Providing accurate and concise feedback
Provides safe environment if situation doesn’t go well
Debrief actor as they have been told all day they have a bad diagnosis
Medical Doctors get counselling on situation. Goal (not medical feedback):
- How professional
- How much empathy was displayed
Trainers:
- Fake arm
- Fake breasts (to detect lumps) – mainly males (facebook photos)
- Pap smear, catheterize etc learn consent not just health (medical)
- Also includes training in areas of physiotherapy, pharmacology, corporate office, work place relationships, mediation, courageous conversations, bullying, military, law students, magistrates, job interviews, police, parliamentary driver training, mental health issues etc
Military and police are trained to be forceful!
After this very informative topic, we then went to our Fines session and collected a few dollars from most members.
Raffles were also distributed to winners and chocolates shared.

A NOTE FROM ALLEN MORGAN TO DAVID WALLIS -
HI PRESIDENT DAVID,
I believe you are a HIGHFLYER !
I think you are always up for a challenge, SO HERE IS ONE FOR YOU TO DO WHILE IN Mount Gambier
Adam Lindsay Gordon
On 28 July 1864, Australian poet and horseman Adam Lindsay Gordon made his famous daredevil ‘leap’ alongside the Blue Lake at Mount Gambier.
He jumped his horse Red Lancer over a post-and-rail guard fence beside the Blue Lake and landed on a small 1.8 metre ledge, with a 60 metre drop to the water, then jumped back on to the road.
Then on 11 May 1934, Adam Lindsay Gordon was accorded the greatest literary honour when His Royal Highness the Duke of York unveiled his bust in Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey.
the only Australian to be so honoured. In 1970, Gordon was honoured on a postage stamp bearing his portrait issued by the
Australia Post. On 20 September 2014, Gordon was inducted into the Australian Jumps Racing Association's Gallery of Champions. A suburb In Canberra, Australia's capital, is named
Gordon in his honour.
The last time I was in Mount Gambier, I achieved the same feat as Adam Lindsay Gorden but without the horse!
Maybe after you finish putting out all the fires in & around Mount Gambier, you could try this but with a horse !
No reply needed, Just a photo will suffice as prove to show us all when you return that it can be done.
