Guest Speaker

P Frank planned to cover, and did, briefly, before running out of time, the acronyms used in Rotary, of which there are many. Some examples were used and all Members were directed to the new Handbook recently sent to all Members by Ross Harrison – Club Service Director which contains a comprehensive list of the regular acronyms used. Talk tragically cut short due to, well - unexpected detailed commentary from Members.

Meeting 7th July 2022
Meeting notes from 7 July 2022

International Toast:

Bruce Radford proposed a Toast to RC of Cuauyan (pronounced Car-why-ann) in the Philippines where our own Malou Deakin was born and where Malou is now leading our charity work there.

Meeting details were not available however the Club appears very active in the community. A long list of activities is on their Website. They have donated outdoor portable sinks – made from recycled 44 gallon drums for schools. Used for clean water and sanitisation which are so important for school children to remain healthy thus enabling them to attend school more regularly. Also allowing mothers to spend less time carrying water.

They have conducted minor cleft palate operations for poor patients of the city, free of charge. Sports equipment is donated to the City Sports Council with school chairs and desks and Christmas gifts to the Isabel School for the blind.

COVID vaccinations and medical oxygen tanks have also been organised for patients suffering breathing difficulties during COVID.

They are collaborating with law enforcement agencies, elected officials and non-profit organisations assisting victims of human trafficking – both sex trafficking and labour trafficking. Over 50% of human trafficking victims are children trafficked for sex.

President’s Comments:

President Frank welcomed Members and guests and readily admitted his technological prowess will improve with time. (maybe slow but he will get there)

He thanked Stuart Coward (RC Caloundra) for the invitation to that Club’s Changeover noting it was very traditional. (Which I think that meant they conformed to the agenda timings unlike some – one in particular- at CALPAC)

Reminders:

  • Walk for Polio – Sunday 14th August 8.00am to 11.00 am. La Balsa Park, Harbour Parade Buddina 4575. $20.00 pp donation – children are free.

  • Peter Higgs reminded all that the BBQ at the Caloundra Air Museum (first since 2019 – which was a wash out) the weekend of 9th & 10th July. There were still some spots on Sunday the 10th to be filled.

  • Evelyn McCorkell and P Frank kept everybody focused on purchasing tickets and inviting friends to the Westend To Broadway event at the Hangar at the Air Museum on Saturday night 27th August 2022.

  • Tony Long updated the meeting that he now has 18 teams for the Annual Golf Day on Friday 7th October 2022. More Teams are required – give your lead to Tony and he will chase them up. Presented by Tony Long. His dilemma – somewhat like many in the Club, how do you squeeze 57 yrs of working life into 5 min??

First job Junior Clerk – Caboolture Shire Council 8/6/1964. Affixing stamps to envelops. Big promotion to Council Paymaster and Cost Clerk – ironically no extra pay (can just imagine how that would fly these days!!!).

Consequently, left Caboolture and started with Landsborough Shire as Main Roads Cost Clerk 11/9/1967. ( replaced Tony with two people at that time)

Major job – “Form 3 and balancing the 44 gal drums. (Hmm no mention of how many went missing for incinerators and BBQ’s)

Rotarian of the Month (ROM) – July

Peter Hovey awarded the ROM to Ken Hinkly for the time and considerable effort to produce a Powerpoint presentation every week for our meetings. Well Down Ken.

Guest Speaker

Win Fowles introduced Mr Kevin Moss - OAM

Kevin alert us to the publishing of 4 books over 25 yrs. The fourth being Bush Connections – A Vietnam Conscript’s Memoir. A writer seeks to leave his mark with98% of people considering writing a book however only 2% are published.

To start you need motivation;

  • Writing about little known exploits of parents

  • Recording as much as possible for the kids and future generations

A Telegraph boy in Quilpie Qld conscripted into the “Nashos”. Army was not his preferred career choice.

The first draft of the fourth book was fairly low standard  but with the assistance of; spell check, grammar check and the Publisher the current publication was borne.

Kevin suggests when writing any of your memoirs, start writing / planning chapters and jot down anything that comes to mind into those chapters. Write honestly and with some humour to arrive at considerable satisfaction.

Your legacy in print.

Peter Higgs thanked Kevin on behalf of the Club.

Kevin’s book was auctioned by Les Pontin with three bidders vying for ownership but eventually won by PP Greig with proceeds retained by the Club. Thank you Kevin.

Sergeant – Peter Higgs

Extracted funds from members via fines for various factual and maybe some fictional issues.

Raffle – by Les Pontin and Graeme Bowden many prizes won and enjoyed.
