Calpac Capers
Meeting on 7th November 2024

Geoff Leddy as MC/Sergeant chaired this Club Assembly on 7th November.

Suzanne Lee-Archer presented the International Toast after learning that her brother’s partner Wan works for Rotary International Bangkok. So we toasted the Rotary Club of Pranakorn Sri Ayutthaya, the old capital of Siam, located 80 km north of Bangkok. Yes, we all had trouble pronouncing the name!

The club service directors announced what they were doing, and Clive reported on the board’s decisions at the last meeting.

Malou shared a letter of thanks from the Philippines.

Les urged us all to take part in vocational visits, which have not been well supported.

Win promoted his granddaughter’s play in which she has a starring role.

Suzanne advertised Inner Wheel’s used clothing sale at Unity College.

Peter Higgs called for donations to the Rotary Foundation, and also asked for one more volunteer for the trailer raffle on Sunday morning on Bulcock Street.

Alan Stephens spoke of the need to fix our website, as Caloundra comes up but not Caloundra Pacific.

Three volunteers are needed to do radio interviews on what Rotary means to them.  Jacqui was very keen to do so!

Have your say as we investigate coastal hazard adaptation options at key areas across the Sunshine Coast
We have 60 kilometres of coastline along the Sunshine Coast, which makes our region a highly desirable place to live, work, and play.

Sea level rise and severe storms are changing our coastline and coastal communities, but you can help protect what’s important.

We are carefully examining how to manage these important coastal areas through Coastal Hazard Adaptation Precinct Planning (CHAPP).

Background
In 2021, in consultation with our community, we prepared the Our Resilient Coast. Our Future which is the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) for the region.

The Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy gives locality-specific summaries of coastal hazards. It describes how and when they might affect our community, and ways to adapt to them now and in the future.

In response to the CHAS, Council is now planning for coastal hazards at key areas – Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Golden Beach and Caloundra (Bulcock Beach).

Investigating potential adaptation options
Our community faces challenges from coastal hazards and flooding associated with climate change. For example, high tides are sometimes flooding some low-lying roads. Storms are eroding foreshores.

If nothing is done, our coastal public spaces will suffer. Rising sea levels, more severe storms, intense rain, and more erosion will cause this. They will become further damaged and less safe.

The first part of this long-term planning includes looking at potential adaptation options for public areas and assets, to reduce the impacts from increasing coastal hazards.

Proactive measures taken today will ensure that we are better equipped to face future climate challenges, minimise damage and ensure a more resilient Sunshine Coast for everyone.

Protecting the local values and character across the region are critical criteria in ensuring our region stays great for future generations.

Adaptation can reduce risks to our community and public infrastructure from coastal hazards and flooding, so we can continue to use these areas. These investigations will include identifying adaptation options, with a primary focus on long-term solutions for future planning out to the year 2100.

We need your input
We need our community’s input on how you currently use these places and what you value about them. Your input will be considered in the development and analysis of options.

You can find out more about these investigations and provide your feedback online or at a workshop in your area. Simply click the button below to visit Have Your Say Sunshine Coast for details and to have your say before 25 November 2024

Developing Club relationships

26  October  2024

I hope this email finds you well. My name is  Danny Pietersen , and I am a member of the Rotary Club of  Atlantis  in  South Africa. Our club is passionate about community service, international understanding, and making a positive impact.

I am writing to explore the possibility of establishing a relationship between our clubs. We believe that by joining forces, we can create even greater change in our communities and beyond. Here are a few ideas on how we can collaborate:

Joint Service Projects: Let’s identify areas where our clubs’ expertise and resources can complement each other. Whether it’s a local project or an international initiative, working together can amplify our impact.

Exchange Programs: We could organize exchange programs for members, allowing us to learn from each other’s experiences and cultures.

Twin Club Relationship: A twin club partnership would allow us to foster long-term connections. We can share best practices, celebrate milestones together, and collaborate on meaningful projects.

Please let me know if you’re open to exploring this partnership further. I believe that together, we can make a significant difference. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for considering this proposal, and I hope we can build a strong and lasting relationship between our Rotary clubs.

Yours in Rotary service

Danny Pietersen
