Calpac Capers
Calpac Capers 28th November 2024
The group was welcomed by Ashton Wood, Founder and CEO of DV Safe Phones in their new offices at Mooloolaba.
Ashton advised there are about 2million victims of domestic violence each year in Australia and DV safe phones is helping to provide a safe means of contact for them with the use of donated and reconditioned mobile phones. This all started by Ashton about 5 years ago with assistance from Patrick King and King IT.

Since they started, they have received almost 30,000 phones from various donations. They currently have to throw away about just over one third of phones received and this has increased since the 3G network was disconnected a few weeks ago.

So far, just under 11,000 domestic violence survivors have received a DV Safe Phone from them. They currently check, repair and distribute about 100 phones per week. These are not given directly to DV victims by them, but are provided to agencies that know the right people and ways to distribute to those in need.

There are 368 front line agencies and service providers helping to connect victims with a safe phone.
There are 951 corporate partnerships and community organisations raising funds and providing phones for them.
Some recent examples are ANZ bank, The Lott, and a couple of private philanthropists. They get no government funding.
The organisation is governed by a volunteer board and has around 6 part time volunteers, giving about 4 hours each per week, to help with checking, cleaning and charging the donated phones that are able to be used. They provide a prepaid sim card in each phone with a 2 month life after which the recipient has to renew the sim card at their cost.

Ashton demonstrated for us a new laser machine he has acquired from China to delaminate the glass backing on the phone mother boards. This saves their team a huge amount of time.

Ashton provided a great range of nibblies, cheese and biscuits and drinks for us which was greatly appreciated. All agreed it was a very worthwhile and educational visit, thank you Ashton.

Calpac Capers 21 November 2024

Club Sergeant, Clive Seymour: Welcomed our guest, Yvonne Higgs.
He then proposed the Royal/Loyal toast and took us through the 4 Way Test and Rotary grace.

Malou Deakin: Proposed the International toast to The Rotary Club of Mariloa in the Philippines’ province of Bulacan an area impacted regularly by devastating Typhoons
It was established in 1999 and has an active membership of 33. Significant projects include a 6 monthly dental program for 200 local students and a health screening project for Brest and Cervical cancer. The toast was well supported by the members.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL MOMENT:

IT’S WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE ARE.
Michael and Patrick managed to get the video up and running in record time and the members showed their appreciation. The video addressed India’s successful eradication of Polio as of 2014. A Dr Varghese lamented the fact that he was approaching retirement but hopeful that he would not be replaced as there were no new cases. Internationally he discussed he difficulties of Logistics in Developing countries but was encouraged to believe that nearby Afghanistan and Pakistan would soon be Certified Polio Free as well.

PRESIDENT'S MOMENT: President David on leave.

DIRECTORS' MOMENTS: Marion stressed the ongoing support needed for the Hampers and Bottle and Can collection program.

MEMBERS' MOMENTS:
Les told members of alleged scam being perpetrated on elderly gentlemen in local shopping centers as well as advising where to buy cheap wallets.
It was well received by ½ of our membership.

Will Waterford encouraged members in practical ways of promoting Rotary membership.

Peter Higgs covered the upcoming week-ends Trailer rosters and was hopefully of going into the black with income v expenses for this year’s raffle

GUEST SPEAKERS:
Greig Lee-Archer introduced 2 of our members Bron and Noel Bates who have recently returned from their 3 rd visit to the UMOJA Orphanage in Remote Kenya some 2 hrs drive from Mumbasa.

Noel started by describing the trip in effect being 34 hrs from Brisbane each way and their contact with the orphanage commenced through Rotary Club of Biloela (their former club). The journey started in 2016 to see it take in their first children in 2021.   It is supported by RAWCS.
Separate accommodation wings for boys and girls with current intake of 17 children aged between 4 to14 years of age. Capacity of around 25 with concerns of what comes next for the children. Bron reported that one sponsor was considering bringing their child over to Australia to complete their education.
Prior to heading over this time Bron and Noel raised $8,500 from a charity luncheon/afternoon with blind auctions, quilt sales and raffles included. Bron stated that one individual gave a lump sum $1,000 in view of the fact that Rotary guarantees at least 95% of all funds reach the intended target group. Members may be interested in Googling what some of the other Major players guarantee.

Details of how some of the children ended up in the orphanage were tragically covered by the speakers, but the overriding message was the hope that the start offered to these children, would not only help them catch up with their peers, but see them into a future life that their peers could but dream of Thanks were given to Bron and Noel for their presentation and hard work to date.   The planning for the 4 th trip is under way.

They also managed to catch up with an exchange student in Belgium on this trip who lived with them some 10+ years ago.

SERGEANT'S SESSION:
Apparently, no misdemeanors from any of our members over the last week, so Clive, in his outrage, fined everyone $2-00 and asked members to work harder!!

RAFFLES: went well with only 2 members pulling out their own tickets.

NEXT MEETING: Caloundra Golf Club is unavailable, members to be notified ASAP with possibility of District Visit on cards.
