President’s Comments
Greig discussed the pro’s and con’s of the Club’s move from Parklands Tavern back to the Caloundra Golf Club beginning on 7/7/2022.
There was a lively discussion, despite 2/3rds majority vote to return to the Golf Club. Some Members of course unhappy with the result of the vote. Cost of the meal and rigid registration requirements being the main issues. Membership Director agreed to listen to all concerns so that they could be discussed at the next available Board meeting.
Directors Moments
Brian Reith reminded Members that their ½ year dues should be paid by 30th June 2022. (Brian’s last major task as Treasurer before Clive Seymour takes the reigns.
Will Waterford spoke briefly about the Club’s next Guest Speaker on 7/7/2022. Kevin Moss OAM will be discussing Veterans help. Win shared Kevin is a man of many talents and that he has written his memoir involving his service as a conscript in the Australian Army. Described as “a real bushie” as well as a writer.
Guest Speaker
Peter Higgs educated many with his entertaining and professionally put together talk entitled “When Wool was King”. Peter led Members through the history of the Australian Wool Industry from the early 1800’s to the present day.
The Macarthur family, Elizabeth Macarthur’s purchase of Merino sheep, the shearers strike of 1891, Fred Wolsey’s Shearing Machinery, clippers, the construction of shearing sheds all featured. Transporting wool from the wool sheds by camel, paddle-steamer, wagons and finally today's massive road trains were depicted on Peter’s slides.

As a wool classer of experience, Peter discussed the types of Merino sheep, the baffling auction system to sell wool, wide combs and the extraordinary value / price of sheep dogs (Kelpies) to work the sheep (around $27,000 to $35,000 can be paid for a “good” dog.
To finish an excellent talk, Peter informed the audience that while Australia no longer “rides on the sheep’s back” – (oil and iron ore have triumphed) there are still 60 million sheep in Australia and the Wool Industry is vibrant and strong.
