Meeting held on 1st May 2025 
Ken Hinkly opened the meeting as Sergeant/MC at 6.30pm
As per usual, members toasted King and Country, then recited the Rotary Grace and the 4 Way Test.International Toast –
David Millar presented a toast to the Rotary Club of Los Angeles (LA5), California.
It was founded in 1909 with Franklin D Rosevelt as President, hence it is 116 years old and was the 5th Rotary Club to form. It is not only one of the oldest but is also one of the largest in the world with over 300 members.
They run a golf tournament similar to our club, but they raise about $40,000 there. The Club gives out around 65 scholarships each year to disabled children.
Their dues are $2800 per year or $2500 per year for Senior Active members, plus a $600 joining fee.  Vocational Moment - David Johnston
David was born in Toowoomba and educated in Brisbane doing his dentistry degree at UQ. He worked in Brisbane for 7 years then shifted to Caloundra and with a business partner ran a dentistry practice for 35 years. He is married and has 5 children and 13 grandchildren. He joined Rotary in 1988 and became Club treasurer in 1989 and 1990. He has served as Secretary and Treasurer several times. David was Club President in 1994/95. He has always enjoyed camping with his family and enjoys the fellowship of Rotary and giving back to the community.
David has seen many changes in Rotary since he joined such as make-ups etc. An RI Video about the history of Rotary was shown while we enjoyed our dinner. Treasurer Clive Seymour gave a report on behalf of President David about the Board meeting held last Monday.
He advised that the ROMAC Trivia night raised around $8700 and Greig advised there was a further $1500 from Rotary Clubs that was also deposited into the ROMAC account. He advised that we will be having Youth training at the next club Assembly in June. This is compulsory by RI and if we miss the meeting it can be done online. Clive also advised that the Club’s costs are rising and it may be likely that an increase in dues will occur later in the year and changes to the Club weekly meeting raffle are being considered.
International Service - Ross Harrison
Ross advised that Marion was continuing with the KIVA project and it was going well with 100% of the loans repaid. Barb Bailey will do the Christmas shoeboxes again this year. Ross also reported again on the Philippines project stating that we are looking for a legacy project in Cauayan City in Isabella in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Cauayan. Membership – Will Waterford
Will spoke about our new badges and also has some Rotary pins available at $2 each and some stickers for your car rear windscreen. We hope to induct Avi Singh as a new member on 15th May. Clive has prepared a new membership form. 
Vocational Service – Les Pontin
Les advised our Vocational speakers will now be one each month. Peter Hovey will be looking after Pride of Workmanship Awards, and we are still looking for more nominations. There will be an email about this. No Vocational visits this Rotary year but some next year. Les also advised he is doing the CEO sleepout again this year on 19th June. The Board has approved $1000 for this. We may also get about a $1000 from the golf club from bottles/cans for change.Club Service – Evelyn McCorkell
Evelyn spoke about “Broadway in the Hangar” and advised she has applied for some grants but no result yet. Will start soon on marketing/advertising. She is looking for someone to do the weekly attendance bookings for our meetings from 1st July. She will continue to do our weekly bulletin for another year. David Johnson is looking for someone to do the meeting power point slides in June, July and most of August. Community Service – Jacqui Castorina
Jacqui said the Committee is looking for which Community groups we would like to work with such as Rosies etc. She is looking for suggestions from members.
Les P said he and Greig had a meeting with one of the CEO’s of the St.Vinnies homeless with a view to having service clubs such as Rotary and Lions to take it on as there are not enough doing it now.  Youth Service – Bruce Radford
Geoff Leddy gave a brief rundown on the RYDA project for this year. We will be having a RYDA Committee meeting this coming Thursday. This year we will have 14 schools, and we will be doing 8 days in July and 3 days in August plus 4 set up days. He said the biggest problem is going to be volunteers and the major workload will again fall on to our club. We will be putting pressure on our members in late June and in July to put their hands up. This is the biggest amount of manhours of any project this club does each year and is extremely important as it saves lives.
Bruce spoke about Youth Exchange (YEP) and host parents. Noel is our Youth protection officer and he and Bronwyn will do the first two weeks in July to orient our incoming student Tereza Zankova from Czechia. Other hosts will be Peter and Sylvia, Greig and Suzanne, Kate’s parents and Bob Ainsworth from Caloundra Rotary Club. We are still looking for host parents for June 2026. Tereza is booked in to Pacific Lutheran College.
Members Moments –
Win Fowles reminded us that Anzac Day was also the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Australian Embassy Saigon. He also advised that the Council CEO, John Baker, will be our guest speaker on 15th May.
Ross Harrison advised he and Tony Long had held a meeting with Adam and Joey and also Jackson regarding the golf day. Joey and Adam have agreed to take over the organising of the golf day. Jackson has agreed to take over the operations on the day. Tony will still have input as a mentor and adviser.
Sergeants Session –
Ken Hinkly proceeded to fine a few people but then got almost everyone for not wearing the Rotary pin. Very clever Ken.
