International Toast
Tony Long gave the International Toast to the Association of Rotary Clubs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as finding information on individual clubs was challenging. In Dubai there are 9 Rotary clubs and 4 Rotoract clubs.
They meet every second Monday, except for a summer break in July & August. They conduct the meetings in English.
There have not been any Rotary clubs in Iran since the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
President’s Update
President Pete advised that the Rotary Club of Nambour will require assistance in the cafe at the Showgrounds on Saturday, 25 July from 8am - 12pm for the swap meet.
Director Updates
Bruce gave an update on RYDA. Kendall Hatchett and Terry Landsberg will be attending for the 20,000 student, along with media!
Suzanne gave an update on Bunnings BBQs (none yet scheduled), prizes are required for the Golf Day, and sites are being booked for the trailer raffle.
Ross gave can update on the imminent trip to the Philippines to paint and officially open the teacher’s accommodation. Ross, Greig, Malou & John from our club are travelling over and will also attend the Rotary Club of Cayauan’s change-over on 8 August.
Barb advised the future vocational visits are:
*13 August to the RSL Museum with dinner at the RSL afterwards
*22 October to Best Practice Eye Care with dinner at a local restaurant
*Sunshine Coast airport likely in February 2027.
Eve advised that the next social night will be on 30 July at Spinners bowling on Bulcock St.
Member’s Moments
Les mentioned that Frank Loriem’s funeral was today. Frank was a former member of the Club.
Tony reminded everyone when the Golf Day is - Friday, 9 October, and encouraged us to get people to participate and register a team, more prizes for raffles etc always welcome.
Guest Speaker, Topic “Here Hear”
Our own Mark Paton was guest speaker tonight and gave a very informative presentation on artificial intelligence (AI). If you think you don’t use AI, you are wrong. AI is already in general use in everyday products - our phones, tvs, cars, etc.
